Essential Oil For Skin — Matched to Your Skin Type

Oily, dry, sensitive, or dull — the right oils, dilution ratios, and day-vs-night protocols for each skin type.

Get Jojoba (Universal Carrier) →

The Rule: Never Undiluted

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts — 1 drop of rose essential oil represents ~60 rose petals. Always dilute at 1–3% before skin contact. That is 3–9 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil. Sensitive skin: 1% (3 drops). Normal skin: 2% (6 drops). Spot treatments: 3% (9 drops).

Skin-Type Matching Guide

Oily / Acne-Prone

Tea Tree Oil

Kills acne bacteria (terpinen-4-ol), reduces sebum inflammation

Neem Oil

Antifungal, antibacterial — treats stubborn breakouts and scalp acne

Jojoba Oil

Best carrier — mimics sebum, regulates oil production

Recipe

3 drops tea tree + 1 drop neem in 10 ml jojoba. Use at night on breakout areas.

Avoid: Coconut oil (comedogenic), heavy citrus application on active breakouts

Dry / Dehydrated

Lavender Oil

Anti-inflammatory, promotes healing — safest for dry, sensitive patches

Orange Oil

Limonene promotes collagen synthesis — use at night

Jojoba Oil

Seals moisture, doesn't evaporate — ideal carrier for dry skin

Recipe

4 drops lavender + 2 drops orange in 10 ml jojoba. Apply at night after moisturiser.

Avoid: High-menthol oils (peppermint) — cool sensation can exacerbate dryness

Dull / Uneven Tone

Lemon Oil

60–70% limonene — natural brightening, mild exfoliant effect

Orange Oil

90–95% d-limonene — brightening and collagen support

Rosemary Oil

1,8-cineole — improves microcirculation for even tone

Recipe

3 drops lemon + 2 drops orange in 10 ml jojoba. Night use only — citrus is photosensitising.

Avoid: Any citrus oil during the day or before sun exposure

Sensitive / Reactive

Lavender Oil

The most skin-tolerated essential oil. Anti-inflammatory, calming.

Jojoba Oil

Hypoallergenic carrier — rarely triggers reactions

Recipe

3 drops lavender in 10 ml jojoba (1% dilution for sensitive skin). Patch test first. Start every other day.

Avoid: Neem (too potent), citrus oils, high-menthol concentrations, new oils without patch testing

Morning vs Night Routine

Morning (safe oils)

  • Lavender — calming, anti-inflammatory, wear under SPF
  • Tea tree — antimicrobial spot treatment under SPF
  • Rosemary — focus and scalp, fine in daytime
  • Peppermint — energising, but avoid eye area

Night only (photosensitising)

  • Lemon — brightening but UV-reactive → use at night only
  • Orange — same as lemon
  • Neem — strong smell + potent, night use recommended

Frequently Asked Questions

Is essential oil for skin safe to apply directly?

No — never apply undiluted essential oil to skin. Mix 1–3 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil (jojoba for oily skin, almond for dry, rosehip for sensitive). Undiluted application causes irritation, sensitisation, and sometimes chemical burns.

Will essential oils cause breakouts on face?

Pure essential oils are non-comedogenic when properly diluted. Always patch-test on the inner forearm for 24 hours before facial use. Avoid coconut oil as a carrier if you are acne-prone — it scores 4/5 on the comedogenic scale. Use jojoba instead.

Which essential oil is best for glowing skin?

Lemon and orange essential oils contain limonene — a natural brightening compound. Use at night only as citrus oils are photosensitising. Mix 3 drops lemon + 3 drops orange in 10 ml jojoba. Apply after cleansing, before moisturiser. Consistent 4-week use shows visible improvement in skin tone.

Day or night — when should I apply essential oils to skin?

Night use is safest as a default. Citrus oils (lemon, orange) are photosensitising — use only at night. Tea tree, lavender, and rosemary are fine for day use under SPF. Neem has a strong smell — night use only. As a rule: if in doubt, apply at night.

Which essential oil is best for oily skin in India?

Tea tree is best for oily and acne-prone skin — terpinen-4-ol kills acne bacteria and reduces sebum inflammation. Dilute in jojoba oil (non-comedogenic, mimics sebum) at 2% concentration. Neem oil adds antifungal properties for stubborn breakouts. Use at night.
